Located on the famous Roman imperial road "Via Claudia Augusta," the region has been one of the most-important north-south trade routes over the Alps since A.D. 50. Along with the Bünden passes, the route was one of the historically important Alpine passes from the Middle Ages until the Early Modern Age.
